When we first began working in Bertie County in 2009, one of the ways we bonded with our future students and their families was by playing Cornhole, a popular bean-bag toss game that utilizes a set of two wooden boards with a hole in each. It made perfect sense that our first ever project in the fall of 2010 was to construct well-crafted Cornhole boards and cover them in bold graphics inspired by specific concepts. After following a set of precise plans to build their boards, students were partnered up and given a two-color palette to correspond to the two sets of beanbags (plus black and white), and a conceptual direction inspired by an action verb (“to bend,” “to gather,” etc). Using Adobe Illustrator and a tedious but precise taping method, students hand-painted their graphics onto their board. At the end of the project, we hosted a Cornhole Showdown for the whole town and auctioned off the 6 sets of boards as a fundraiser for our ongoing projects.
