In our first project of the 2012-2013 school year, students were asked to design a 2-dimensional cardboard module in Adobe Illustrator that could be produced in serial using the laser cutter, then connected to construct a 3-dimensional object. This was both a graphic design challenge as well as an engineering challenge, as it asked students to consider the relationship between a two-dimensional building block and how it would interlock to create structural integrity. The final cardboard structures were installed in the breezeway of the high school campus.
